FRUIT IN THE MEDICINE CABNET

The fruit of the Citrullus lanatus vine has had this power for thousands of years. Watermelon was recorded in ancient Egypt, and has been a staple of both food and water in Africa and Asia. (With a water content of 92 percent, it's not called watermelon for nothing.)

Watermelon has witnessed many changes and discoveries in the past 20 years, however. Thanks to scientific advances, it's being touted as so healthful it should be stored in your medicine chest. It won't fit, of course, but even that's about to change: Before long, you'll see watermelons so small you'll be tempted to shoplift them. In the meantime, you're stuck with (or blessed with, depending on how you feel) the larger ones, which are most abundant just about this time of year.

Diet Power has declared watermelon one of "The 10 Best Foods." Its delectable flesh has no cholesterol and virtually no fat (almost none of which is saturated)—a stellar accomplishment for a food often served as a dessert at picnics. Watermelon is an excellent source of potassium and vitamins A, C, and B6. It's also a good source of water (that's why the things are so heavy), so you can chew your way to getting your daily H20
Watermelons are still on the kitchen counter instead of the medicine chest because they're bulky, but that's changed over the years. Although the Japanese recently created a cube-shaped watermelon (click here to see it), in America the trend is toward smaller and smaller. In part, this stems (no pun intended) from the craze to make watermelons seedless. Melons without seeds are smaller and rounder than their seedy cousins.
The technology to grow seedless melons has been around for half a century, but popular for only the last 15 years or so, says Warren Roberts, a watermelon expert and an associate professor of horticulture at Oklahoma State University. Today, one-third to one-half of all watermelons sold in this country are seedless, and in California the rate is seven in eight.

The Sundance Film Festival is held this time of year in Park City, Utah.
Everyone is either going to see the new films or star gazing. You see Park City on TV but it is more than a film festival.
They claim to have the best snow and the best ski resorts and all the stars too.
There are more than 750 acres of ungroomed, natural bowls that are for big mountain skiing and riding.
Signature runs allow intmediate skiers to conquer more of the mountain.
Aggressive grooming entails grooming 15 advanced runs on a rotating nightly basis for snowboarding.
Park City has the largest half pipe in North America, with a 22 foot wall.
Home to the 2002 Winter Olympics, an Olympic Park was built. It was used for Nordic jumping and the sliding sports of bobsled, luge, and skeleton.
Still being used for national and international competitions serving as year-round training grounds for high performance athletes.
Visitors can tour the Olympic Park at 3000 Bear Hollow Drive.
They can even take a bobsled ride of their own, if you dare.
Park City has a rich history of its own.
Settled by Mormons in 1848, when silver was found in 1868 it became a boom town.
Most all of the old buildings were destroyed in a fire in 1898. By 1899 the town was rebuilt. With the price of silver dropping in price most people left, leaving Park City to depend on skiing and tourists.

THE MAILMAN COMES HOME

Where In the World is Karl Malone

Karl Malone, of the Utah Jazz basketball team, doesn’t come to town much any more. He was popular when he played for the Jazz with John Stockton. They were a team. Stockton even has a car dealership called “Stockton to Malone”.
Then things changed when Karl left the Jazz to go to California and be Laker.
Most of the fans thought he should have stayed with the Jazz and give up his dream of a championship ring. It was disloyal to leave.
Not giving Karl any respect for the time served with the Jazz.
He simply had to do what he had to do. But fans would not forgive him for leaving. He said he would be back in two years. He was planning on building another home and make Utah the place where he would live when he retired.
That was what we thought, until the first time he came back as a Laker to play against the Jazz. He was embarrassed by the boos and the lack of cheers you would think he would hear.
So we haven’t seen much of Karl Malone in Utah. No new home is being built. So where is he?
His presence at the Delta Center is about to be made permanent.
Karl Malone’s NO. 32 will be raised to the rafter’s fittingly along with John Stockton’s NO 12. On March 23, 2006.
Before the retirement of his jersey, a 15-foot bronze sculpture of Malone, will be unveiled, in front of the Delta Center. It will be about 10 feet from where Stockton’s likeness already stands. The sculpture reflects their 18 seasons together with the Utah Jazz.
Just like they did every game, the sculpture of Stockton, passing the basketball to Malone who is stretching for a dunk.
This will be a great addition to the Delta Center, in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah.
Karl Malone retired last February with 36,374 points to his credit. More than any NBA player in history except Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Karl is also among the NBA”S top 10 in at least 9 other categories.
No one has ever shot as many free throws as Malone or played as many minutes.
Malone now lives on his Arkansas ranch.
Some of us still like to hear about the “Mailman”

SENIOR MOMENTS

Senior Moments

Age doesn’t make you forgetful, having way to many stupid things to remember make you forgetful.

My face in the mirror isn’t wrinkled or drawn.
My house isn’t dirty, the cobwebs are gone.
My garden looks lovely and so does my lawn.
I think I might never put my glasses back on.

The nice thing about being senile is, you can hide your own Easter eggs.

Know how to prevent sagging? Just eat till the wrinkles fill out.

Don’t let old age get you down. It to hard to get back up.

You don’t stop laughing because you get old; you grow old because you stop laughing.

Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway.
The good fortune to run into ones I do and the eyesight to tell the difference.

UNUSUAL HOUSE CAT

Only Natural Pet Store

A Different Kind of House Cat
Hybrid
Our son Bob brought us a kitten. We both have a soft spot for the little fellows. We could have a dozen of them.
This one was different. It is a hybrid, half Manx and half Siamese.
Her name is Kattie. Big blue eyes, milk chocolate in color, with the tan and black markings of the Siamese Dad. No tail like the Manx mother.
Kattie has no idea she is a cat. We were going to tell her when she got older. Now she is a year old and we can’t tell her. She would never believe it.
She is like no other cat I know. She doesn’t want to be held, don’t rub up on your legs, or get under your feet.
She will let you pet her when she wants to. This is not optional.
She hates cats. She will look at them if they are outside the window.
Kattie is strictly a house pet. She is afraid of the outside. She is traumatized each time you have to take her out.
She doesn’t need to talk. She can tell you what she wants and will lead you to it, if you don’t understand what she is telling you.
The other night was a real challenge. She would not shut up. In the kitchen was something she wanted. We went through the list of obvious things. Food-no-water-no-toys-no. Finally when she kept looking at the ceiling light, we saw a miller flying around. She hates bugs. When the miller was gone, she trotted off to do something else.
Kattie loves our son Bob. She is his alarm clock in the morning, and can’t wait to get him out of bed. She will cry and roll all over the floor until he says ok, get up in the window seat and I will pet you. With a snap of a finger, she trots off to the seat to get petted.
The rest of us try this and she just acts stupid. What do you mean snapping your fingers at me? She will only do this for Bob.
Recently Bob had to go to California for several days. Kattie moped around the house.
When he called home, we put him on the speaker phone. Kattie, from another room came running at the sound of his voice. Meow, meow, meow, trying to climb up my leg to get to Bob’s voice. When she could not find him on the phone, she looked all under the table, talking as she went, meow, meow, and meow. I told Bob that Kattie was trying to talk to him. He could not believe it. When I held the phone to her Bob said, hi Kattie, how is my baby? She meowed to him on the phone. This is true love.
When I cook a roast, turkey, or bar-b-que ribs, she just knows they are for her. She waits all day and tells you she is ready to eat them. The other day she just knew she wanted sour kraut and wieners. I tried to tell her, but she wouldn’t listen. So I let her have a plate of them. One smell, she blinked her eyes, laid back her ears and flew out of the kitchen.
So much for what Kattie knows. This is a four footed human and don’t try to tell her otherwise.

WILD AND FREE

Only Natural Pet Store

Wild and Free
With all of the old west icons coming to an end, how much longer will there be wild horses?
The western states have had wild horses for hundreds of years.
Horses ran wild and free. You could drive out in the desert and watch them for hours. They ran in herds where one stallion had several mares. There were always colts with them. They were beautiful, proud animals.
If you lived in a remote area, a wild stallion might just steal your mare, from you. It happened a lot where I grew up in Idaho.
In my childhood we had many wild horses that were tamed and used as saddle horses on the ranch.
I had one when I was six years old. His name was Rocket. He lost his mother so when my Dad found him, he brought him home.
Rocket was so small he had to be fed with a baby bottle. When he was old enough to go to the pasture with the other horses he was stolen. We called the Sheriff but we never did get him back.
They use to be wild and free, but today wild and free have restrictions.
They are rounded up by riders and helicopter each year. Some are taken from the herds for adoption and some sold for slaughter. They are sold to packing plants where they are prepared for human consumption in Europe, Asia, and other overseas markets.
Many Americans are opposed to slaughtering horses for any reason let alone for someone to eat. It is like eating the family pet.
Yet 85,000 horses are slaughtered each year.
There are adoption places in every area where you can go and view the horses. They will tell you about the adoption plan. We have one in the Salt Lake area in Butterfield Canyon, near Kennecott Copper Mine.
Utah ranks 35th in the nation in the number of farm and ranch horses, numbering in at 61,000. Just slightly fewer than Wyoming but four times more than Nevada.
I hate to see these once free animals not able to roam free any more. I guess I just oppose to change.

BLOOD PRESURE FACTS

A New Startling Fact on Blood Pressure

Most Americans blood pressure goes up with age. This brings with it a big risk of heart attack and stroke.

Understanding Blood Pressure

Blood pressure fluctuates; you may need several readings at different times of the day to get your average reading.
Always sit for at least 15 minutes before taking the reading to get it accurate.

Making Since of It

There are two numbers; the high one (systolic) gives the pressure of blood against the artery walls while the heart is beating.
The low number (diastolic) is the pressure between beats of the heart. Both numbers are important.

Is it too high or to low?

Any readings above 140/90 talk to your Doctor. Any reading that is above 120/80 means you are at risk of a heart attack or stroke.
When your pressure is 140/90 and more, it means that your arteries are tightening up, your heart has to strain to push the blood through. There is much wear and tear on your arteries.
Low blood pressure is 90/60 as a guide.
If you do nothing to reduce your blood pressure it will more than likely continue to rise.
You may feel fine. That is why they call it the silent killer.

Helping Your Self to Live Longer

Hold the salt is the one easy thing for you to do.
The sodium in salt cause the body to retain extra fluid, this causes the arteries to tighten up.
Your daily salt need is ¼ teaspoon a day. It is ok to have more but not wise to do so.
When starting to cut down for the first time, do it gradually. Stop adding salt at the table. Use other seasonings to cook with.
Lemon, Mrs. Dash, herbs and garlic. Cut your daily intake by ½ of the amount you now use.
Avoid salty things like, bacon, ham, processed lunch meat, pickles and chips. Food at the café is usually high in salt content.

ICON BITES THE DUST

Gun and rifle cases, archery bags, shell bags, and ATV bags at eBags
Another American Icon Bites the Dust.

Another old west icon is coming to an end.
The traditional Winchester rifles carried by pioneers, movie stars, Wild West Lawmen, and outlaws will come to an end in March of 2006. They will no longer be in production it was announced today.
“The Gun That Won the West” will be replaced by only modern, high end models.
The name Winchester will be the only thing left of the traditional rifle, 140 years of manufacturing.
The Winchester model 1873 lever action rife was popular for its reliability.
My family is great deer and elk hunters. They refer to their Winchesters as “old meat in the pot.”
They were used in the movies by James Stewart, John Wayne, and Chuck Connors.
Winchester is an American legend whether you are a gun owner or not.
It is sad to see all of old, rustic allure’s, coming to an end.

Feral Cats

The meaning of feral cats is: un-owned-free roaming. Life expectation is about 2 years or less.
All because of irresponsible pet owners. These little creatures are forced into a life of starvation and fear.
Kittens of all kinds are so cute. They have such a need, tiny helpless little creatures.
When they are forced to be wild and running loose life for them is tragic.
The problem is these cute little kittens grow up to be cats. You can not just decide, to not care of them any more. This is just what happened in our neighborhood. The lady had a female kitten; it grew up, when she moved, it was left behind to fend for its self.
Pregnant and starving she came to our house, who could resist a hungry animal.
My husband fed and tamed her. By spring she had her litter of kittens. She hid them someplace, we only seen them when they were old enough to eat solid food. She brought them to us to be fed.
My husband once again tried to tame the kittens, but they can’t be tamed very well when they are born a feral cat.
One he did get tamed and we got him neutered. The other two could not be tamed so we had to have Animal Control take care of them. A fate I don’t want to think about.
Before we could catch the female and have her spade she was pregnant again. So the cycle repeats its self 3 more times.
We had the last litter that she was to have, tamed them and were able to give these 5 babies a decent chance at being adopted, and keeping one male for out selves.
After that we caught the mother and got her spade. So no more kittens at our house.
We were fortunate to be able to do this.
Someplace this same scenario is happening in neighborhoods across the nation. The animal shelters are full can not take any more feral cats or kittens.
How many animals have to die a perfectly horrible death before pet owners become responsible?
Please make a donation to your Humane Society, money, cat and dog food, cat litter, old blankets, and towels are all welcome.

GRIZZLY BEARS UP CLOSE

Rand McNally Folded Map: Montana, Wyoming
Rand McNally Folded Map: Montana, Wyoming

Grizzly Bears:

Yellowstone National Park has one of the last remaining populations of grizzly. They have been protected here since 1886
Bears gradually became dependent on humans for food. Harsh winters that killed the game they fed on made them seek other means.
Biscuits, steak scraps, fudge, and ice cream they adapted well to human food.
Begging at the roadside, tourists jammed the roadways to feed them. People were injured and consequently, some bears had to be killed each year.
A remedy had to be found. Rangers closed the garbage dumps and taught campers how to store food safely.
These regulations were strictly enforced.
While difficult at first, the grizzly is once again wild and self-sustaining.

The Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center

Visitors to the West Yellowstone, Montana area have an opportunity to learn and view grizzly bears.
Grizzly that are unable to live in the wild, have a second chance here.
The center cares for the grizzly’s and displays them in a beautiful enclosure each day.
You will see wild life as you never have before. A close up view of live active grizzly bears interacting with each other.
Films, presentations, expert knowledgeable staff and rangers make this a great experience for the whole family. Don’t forget your camera.
