It is the river that begins at the face of Libby Dam 17 miles north of the town of Libby, Montana on Hwy 37.

Libby Dam is 422 feet tall and 3055 feet long.
It is made of concrete, 7.6 million tons of concrete.
That amount of concrete would be enough to build a two lane highway from Libby, Montana to Washington DC ----- 2290 miles

Why a Dam

The Kootenai River flowed wildly before the dam was built, causing floods in Montana, Idaho, and British Columbia, Canada.
The Libby Dam was built to provide flood protection as well as an additional source of power to meet increasing energy demands.
Construction began in 1966 and finished in 1972.
One of the reasons we went to see this dam is that my husband and Father
Worked on it for the first three years of construction.
We are dam people.
To see it finished is a moment of pride and fascination.

Go to the visitor’s center it is a great source of information. It is very informative and kid friendly.
It has a movie on the construction and displays of all kinds from animals to the making of the dam.
Also a very nice picnic area.

Enjoy the spectacular scenery from the top of the dam itself and the backup waters which is Koocanusa Lake.
Lake Koocanusa Lake is 90 miles long with a depth of 370 feet.
42 miles of Lake Koocanusa are in British Columbia, Canada.
Lake Koocanusa holds back 1.9 trillion gallons of water.
