Tombstone, Arizona

Unusual name of a town

In the summer of 1877 prospector Ed Schieffelin was prospecting in the southeastern portion of Arizona Territory, when he found a very large and rich vein of silver.
When Ed Schieffelin filed his mining claim the next morning he called it the “Tombstone” mine.
He called it that because he told a friend that he was out collecting rocks, his friend told Ed, that the only rock he was apt to find out prospecting would be a tombstone from the waterless desert and warring Apaches.
Tombstone, Arizona was founded as a town in 1879, taking the name of Tombstone from the mining claim.
It was sparely populated and wild.

Today "the town to tuff to die” it is visited by approximately 450,000 tourists a year.
Walk the the same streets that Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp, Johnny Reno and Big Nosed Kate, and a host of other western ledges walked ,over 120 years ago.
Several blocks surrounding Tombstone’s Allen Street offer a delightful mix of history, shopping, eating and tours to take.
With Old West gunfights, and Wild West shows, horse drawn stage coach and fun this is a place you can not miss.

Out of Ashes

There is something always happening in Tombstone, hundreds of men and woman dressing 1880’s attire and reenact gunfights and other historic events.
“The town to tuff to die” gets its nick name from having to be rebuilt two times after terrible fires destroyed the town.
Tombstone is a three hour drive from Phoenix, Arizona and one hour from Tucson, Arizona.

Things To Do In Tombstone

You will need a full day here to experience “The town to tuff to die”
We took a city tour, by trolley.
After that we spent a lot of time visiting the Bird Cage Museum.
We got curious about the Bird Cage from the movie “Tombstone”.
Today it is a museum and not much like the movie made it out to be.

The Bird Cage Theatre Museum

The famous Bird Cage Theatre of 1881

Such a complete museum of all the original items of the 1881 Bordello and Saloon.
If you listen close you can still hear a song coming from the old piano's.
A noted original, historic, land mark of the Authentic "old west".
It is small with signs of wear and tear all around, that just makes it one of the best museums of "the old west" in this "town too tuff to die".
