Tombstone, Arizona

Unusual name of a town

In the summer of 1877 prospector Ed Schieffelin was prospecting in the southeastern portion of Arizona Territory, when he found a very large and rich vein of silver.
When Ed Schieffelin filed his mining claim the next morning he called it the “Tombstone” mine.
He called it that because he told a friend that he was out collecting rocks, his friend told Ed, that the only rock he was apt to find out prospecting would be a tombstone from the waterless desert and warring Apaches.
Tombstone, Arizona was founded as a town in 1879, taking the name of Tombstone from the mining claim.
It was sparely populated and wild.

Today "the town to tuff to die” it is visited by approximately 450,000 tourists a year.
Walk the the same streets that Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp, Johnny Reno and Big Nosed Kate, and a host of other western ledges walked ,over 120 years ago.
Several blocks surrounding Tombstone’s Allen Street offer a delightful mix of history, shopping, eating and tours to take.
With Old West gunfights, and Wild West shows, horse drawn stage coach and fun this is a place you can not miss.
