ATV Riding while you Rock Hunt
With all of the restrictions on not keeping what you find, such as arrowheads etc. rock hunting is not one of my favorite things to do anymore.
But researching some of the places in Utah I would like to give it one more try.
The west desert of Millard county, is well known for rock hunting. The area around Topaz Mountain you can look for topaz, geodes, and trilobites. Millions of years ago trilobites were small bottom feeding bugs, now preserved over millions of years inn shale rock.
There are few places in the world where visitors can discover more types of marine fossils.
They are legal to keep for your own collection, but against the law to sell them.
Located 16 miles south of US 6/50 near Crystal Peak in Fossil Mountain.
You will have no trouble finding pieces of shale rock that holds the fossils.
Topaz, is the official state gem. It is found in the Topaz Mountain area.
Just 30 miles NW of Delta.
The topaz has a 10 rating. Also this topaz has the luster that is unmatched.
Topaz has a 8 rating for hardness where as the diamond has a 10 rating.
To hunt for topaz, go on a sunny day and look for the sparkling in the rocks.
When you go take your ATV there are many trails to ride. You can make a week-end or a week of fun.
Hiking trails and bike trails are all over here also.
