VOLCANIC LEGACY
Crater Lake, Oregon
Crater Lake National Park was formed after the collapse of the ancient valcano, named Mount Mazama. This volcano's violent eruption, 7700 years ago, was 42 times as powerful as the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helen's in Washington state.
The basin or caldera was formed after the top 5,000 feet of the volcano collapsed. A lava flow sealed the bottom and it filled with water from rainfall and snow melt to create the 7th deepest lake in the world.
In 1959 the lakes depth was established at 1,932 feet making it the deepest lake in the United States.
Words can not do justice to the first look at Crater lake. From a six-mile wide 8000 feet high caldera, you take in the bluest- and deepest-lake you have ever seen.
There is a lodge where visitors can take a boat tour. Or you can navigate the 33 mile rim drive around the lake in your own vehicle.
Also hike the many trails around the lake.
Dont forget the camera.
