Colossal Cave is Dead

Exploring the Colossal Cave is done only by a cave tour.
The tour is around an hour long and the tour route is a half mile long.
As your guide relates cave history and legends, you walk down six-and -a- half stories, viewing Colossal Cave, the largest, dry or dead cave in North America.
Ground water seeping through Escabrosa limestone formed the cave over millions of years ago. Stalactites, Stalagmites, Columns and Draperies formed slowly, from water dripping from the ceiling.
As the climate became more arid, the cave gradually dried out.
Today Colossal Cave is dry or dormant and the formations are no longer growing. That is why they refer to it as a dead cave.
The Colossal Cave is open seven days a week for touring. When it is very hot you will still be at a cool 70 degrees in the cave.
Consider your physical limitations realistically, when choosing cave tours. This tour is not recommended for disabled, or visitors who can not climb steep stairs. The stairs were narrow and uneven.
