The Mormons settled a place that would become known as “Sin City’.

It was a city fueled by the building of a railroad, flooded with workers who built the Hover Dam in 1930’s.
Invaded by mobsters in the, 1940’s.
Lit up by the nuclear bombs, in the 1950’s.
Taken over by Howard Hues, in the 1960’s.
Reshaped into family friendly in the 1980”s.
A corporate profit-maker in the, 1990’s.

It’s literally a beacon of civilization.  Looking from space at our planet, astronauts make out the lights of Las Vegas before anything else.
